The assessment
What the assessment looks like
Timed questions, a progress indicator and an on-screen clock.
Data interpretation
A campus study reports that students who used a new library tool scored 12 percentage points higher on a methods exam. The tool was optional, and those who chose it already had higher prior grades. Which statement best evaluates the claim that the tool caused the gain?
- The 12-point gap proves the tool caused the improvement.
- Students who chose the tool may already have been stronger, so the gap does not by itself prove a causal effect.
- Optional tools cannot be evaluated with exam scores.
- The result is valid if the sample includes more than 30 students.
