Critical thinking

Why critical thinking matters more with AI

Critical thinking is the habit of judging a claim against evidence, constraints and alternatives. Generative models make a fluent claim cheap, so the scarce skill is deciding whether the claim survives.

Recall is less scarce. Judgement is not.

A model can draft a summary, a calculation narrative, or a recommendation in seconds. The draft can be wrong in a way that still reads as finished. The human work is decomposition of the problem, a check of the sources, a look for contradictions, and a decision about what is still uncertain.

That does not make memory useless. It changes the value of stopping at memory. An assessment that only asks for a definition is easier to satisfy with a model than an assessment that asks which of two sources can support a conclusion.

What can be assessed

Useful items ask candidates to evaluate evidence, notice an unsupported step, compare sources, or revise a weak answer under a constraint. Hallucination detection is a specific case: a confident detail that was never in the source. It is one task among others, not a complete theory of reasoning.

GlobalPass+ pathways assess analytical reasoning as a competency, alongside others that depend on the stage. They are not a clinical test of a thinking style, and they are not a guarantee of later job performance.

Questions

What is a critical thinking assessment?

It is a set of tasks that ask someone to judge evidence, arguments or incomplete information. A vocabulary quiz about the phrase critical thinking is not that assessment.
